Woodrow "Mac" Sanders passed away peacefully on Friday, November 11, 2016, after bravely fighting a lengthy illness. During his final hours, he was surrounded in prayer by his children, sister, and pastor. Mac was born in Luling, Texas on August 4, 1943, the fifth of seven children born to Revern and Alburnice Sanders. He grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas and graduated from Miller High School in 1960. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served this county honorably from 1961 to 1967. While in service, he was deployed to Vietnam. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Senior Airman. After returning home, he earned his Bachelor's degree from A&I-Kingsville in 1971 and his master's degree from A&I-Corpus Christi in 1977. After graduating, Mac worked in various social service agencies. He retired from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services in 2009 after 17 years at that agency. He also spent many years as a professor for Bee County College.
Mac is preceded in death by his parents Revern and Alburnice Sanders, brothers James Sanders, Billy Sanders, Bobby Sanders, and Vincent Sanders, as well as his sister, Mary Sanders. His memory will be forever cherished by his loving children, Rod Sanders, Justin Sanders, and Jennifer Guerrero (Arthur); sister, Betty Baldwin; brother, Robert "R.A." Sanders (Alice); sister -in-law, Delores Sanders; and his beloved grandson, Miles Guerrero. He will continue to live in the memory of his many family members and friends, as well as his fellow congregants at Calvary First Baptist Church, his church home throughout his life.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2016 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Calvary First Baptist Church. Interment to follow at 2:00 P.M. at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
