Syleria A. Johnson, age 58, exchanged this earthly home and was carried away peacefully by a host of angels to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on April 15, 2015 in the comfort of her home in presence of family members and hospice medical staff. Syleria was a loving daughter, dedicated and devoted mother, sister, aunt, God-sister, friend, and sister-in-law.
Syleria accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church under the late Rev. C.H. Warren. She participated in several organizations at the church during the life's journey before going home to meet her Savior. She was Vice President of the Choir, member of Adult Sunday School #4 and a member of Mission Mary. She loved her Pastor and church members and was always willing to serve when the opportunity presented itself.
Syleria graduated from Foy H. Moody High School in 1974. She received her Bachelor Degree from Prairie View A & M University and her Masters Degree from Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas.
Syleria was blessed with two wonderful children, De'Mon Q. Johnson and De'Keisha Q.M. Johnson. They were her life and she did a great job of raising and educating both.
Syleria's work career began in Houston, Texas as a Health Inspector for the City of Houston for several years before returning to Corpus Christi. She was hired at Cullen Middle School by C.C.I.S.D., working under Mr. Sid Garner as her principal. Syleria left Cullen and worked at Baker Middle School under Mr. Raymond Davis and Darla Reid for about 25 years. After leaving Baker Middle School, she joined the staff and her sister Juleria at the Student Support Center of C.C.I.S.D. working under Mr. Douglas Cross as her principal where she retired with a total of 30 plus years. She was an excellent teacher, always putting her students first. She loved what she taught and taught it well.
Syleria is preceded in death by her father William R. Johnson; grandparents William and Myrtle Johnson and Madie Birch; sister, Julia F. Newhouse; aunts Ruth Johnson and Olivia Grady, uncles; Joseph Jackson, Clarence Johnson and L.C. Johnson; cousins Cedric Johnson and Jared Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving mother, Shirley M. Johnson; son De'Mon Johnson; daughter De'Keisha Johnson; sister Juleria (Marvin) Edwards; cousin, Anthony (Stancey)Johnson; aunt, Annie Laura Johnson; nephews Amarion, Avion Johnson-Edward; nieces Tanya Johnson, Justine Lemos, God-sister Mitzi Jones and special friends Margaret Evans, Brunetta Hardeman and Edna "Neesee" McDonald.
Special thanks to her Pastor, Arthur L. Lane, nursing staff of Spohn Shoreline, physical and occupational therapist (3rd and 6th floor) and Cancer Treatment Center of America in Atlanta, Georgia. Margaret Evans, Lonnie Porter, Marvin Edwards, Yolanda Barrera, Susie Alonzo, Douglas Cross, Cheryl Savoy, Edna "Neesee" McDonald, Pastor Freddy and Sylvia Naranjo.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home. Entombment to follow at Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
