Rosemary
Martin
Aug 16, 1945 — Dec 5, 2022
Rosemary Sims Martin was born on August 16, 1945 in Refugio, Texas to the late Harold Sims, Sr., and Corrine Charleston Lewis. Rosemary was the fifth child of nine siblings. She attended and was educated at Barefield Elementary and Refugio Junior High School (s). Rosemary came to Christ Jesus at an early age at the Mount Pilgram Baptist Church in Refugio, Texas. She loved to sing, and participated in the children's choir, and then the Youth choir along with her sister aka cousin Josie M. Ricks. In her later teen years Rosemary met Ernest Gene Martin Sr. They were married and to this union were born four children; Rosemarie, Ernest Jr, Curtis Ray, and the late Paul Martin. Rosemary raised her children after separating from Ernest Sr., and remained in Refugio for a few years living with Mattie Martin, Mildred Jones, and Joseph "Papa" Murray who had helped raise her at an early age. In 1968 she moved to Victoria, Texas where she worked in the restaurant hospitality business while attending Victoria Business School at night.
In 1972 Rosemary moved to Corpus Christi with her four children with the loving care and guidance of Mattie Martin and Mildred Jones in helping her to establish a place to live in Corpus. The place was so close it was directly down the street from our Aunt Mattie and Mildred. During this time Rosemary attended True Faith Baptist Church under the Pastoral of Rev. Willie Z. Terry. Finally, after a brief membership at True Faith Baptist Church she moved her membership to the St. Johns Baptist Church under the Pastoral of the late Rev. Harold T. Branch. There Rosemary sung in the Senior Choir, attended Sunday Church School, weekly bible study, and worked in the kitchen. In later years she sung with the Mass Choir, Lead Prayer Groups, and attended Faith Ministry. Before the pandemic, "Faith" was one of her favorite evangelism ministries and was always excited about getting out and sharing with others about Christ. Rosemary loved her four children, especially when the holidays came around, in particular the Season of Christmas. If anyone loved decorating during Christmas it was Rosemary, that was her favorite time of the year not only to decorate but she loved to cook, and especially to make her homemade pies (apple, pecan, and buttermilk).
Rosemary aspired for lots of achievements in her life, she loved to decorate her home and others would ask her to do their homes and she would say "child or girl" seriously. In the 1980's she was selected from a group of women to go to Dallas, Texas for a modeling shoot. Even as a young girl she was sent to Los Angeles to do modeling, but to the surprise of Mattie Martin who helped raise her, Rosemary somehow found herself on a greyhound bus headed back to Refugio in love with a handsome young man named Ernest Gene and the rest is history. If, Rosemary was determined to do or say what was on her mind she did it, and did not mince her words. However, as she continued to grow in Christ Jesus she realized everyday "Falling in Love With Jesus" was the best thing to ever happen to her.
Rosemary loved St. John's Baptist Church and made many friendships over the years. During the last few years as her health begin to decline she missed coming to St. John's if only to be in
the fellowship and worshipping experience. And if anyone who knew Rosemary, she was always a fashionista, who loved clothes and to look Vogue ready. In 2015, Rosemary was diagnosed with a mass in one of her lungs and underwent surgery to remove it, and came through successfully. In 2018, Rosemary retired from the Tejas Disability Center after many years of service. This allowed her to continue participation in her favorite Christian ministry "Faith". In late 2021 her cancer returned and in 2022 she began radiation treatments. However, in October of 2022 the cancer had metastasized to her brain and it was decided she would be taken care of at home by her daughter Marie while under hospice care. On December 5, 2022 our mother Rosemary "Mama" entered her eternal home of Glory.
Rosemary is preceded in death by her father Harold Sims, Sr & her mother Corrine Lewis; her brother Harold Sims, Jr; sisters Janice M. Haynes & Karen J. Gerty; her son Paul A. Martin.
