On December 6, 2020, at the age of 84 Robert Charles Cornell passed away at Irving Nursing & Rehab in Irving, Texas. Robert was born on July 11, 1936 in Kingsville, Texas and was one of ten children born to union of the late Odell Eugene and Mary Jane (Mamie) Cornell.
He accepted Christ at an early age at King Star Baptist Church in Kingsville, Texas. Growing up in the south, Robert attended Frederick Douglass Elementary School in Kingsville and graduated from Solomon Coles High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. At the age of 20, he joined the U.S. Army and served his term and received an honorable discharge.
After military service, he worked for the City of Corpus Christi Water Department and later taught at South Park Middle School and Foy H. Moody High School as an industrial arts instructor. He had a mission for educating our young people, preparing them for their future.
He married Anita LaRue and to that union 2 sons were born, Charles and Alex. In addition to his birth children, he reared Nikita and Derrell. His beloved Anita preceded him in death.
Robert united with Calvary First Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas under the leadership of Dr. HC Dilworth. He continued his life of service under the leadership of the present pastor Bishop C.E. Richardson Sr. He was a faithful member of Calvary and used his gifts to serve in many capacities. His tenure in the Christ's Army included a Deacon, Trustee, and the male chorus. As, we entered the age of technology, he ministered as the Chairman of Calvary's Video and Technology TV Ministry and served as an advisor to the Youth Department to the church family. Through it all, he served faithfully until his health started to diminish and he moved from Corpus Christi to Irving, Texas.
Robert is survived by his sons, Charles Cornell (Ella); Alex Cornell; Derrell LaRue (Gailya), daughter, Nikita Grear-El; grandchildren Antonia LaRue, Darnell (Dee Dee) McQueen; Courtney Grear; nieces & nephews: Patricia Penelton (Harry); James Tomlinson (Jenell); Sean Cornell Kitchen; Rochelle Cornell; Carmen Cornell Martin (Jack); Clifford Cornell (Debra); Sonya Cornell Brooks; Valeria Cornell; Eleanor Cornell; Elliun (Christopher) Cornell (Icy); Ronald Cornell and numerous grand & great nieces & nephews; cousins & friends.
