Mavis Estella Caldwell, affectionately known as "Gammy" to family and friends and "Lady Mavis" in the world of etiquette, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning , August 4, 2020 surrounded by family. Mavis was born and raised in Aransas Pass, TX on August 19, 1947 to Travis and Vera (Robinson) Murphy. She later moved to San Antonio then Dallas, with her final residence in Corpus Christi. A lifelong Believer, Mavis dedicated her life to God, serving in various church ministries that included the choir, Sunday school, women's ministry, and the usher board. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, TX.
A graduate of Del Mar College, Mavis used her skills and passion to help others improve their lives with a career that spanned over 30 years working with organizations such as the Ella Austin Community Center and the Nueces County Community Action Agency, as well as serving in leadership and training for APAC Customer Service and the National Association of Urban Etiquette Professionals.
Mavis is survived by her daughters, Trenette Wilson (Robert), and Melody Nixon-Bice (Herman), and is preceded in death by her beloved sons John Derek and William Lee Nixon. Her grandchildren include KeAndria Perez (Frank), Tristin Wilson (Alisha), Amanii Hanks (Andrew), Kristin Wilson (Kevin), Anthony Riley (Selina), Brianna Riley (Monique) and great grandchildren are Elijah Wilson, Frank Perez Jr., Amara Riley, Anthony Riley, Jr. and several more honorary grandchildren.
Mavis was preceded in death by her older sister, ElexStein Pope (James). Her nieces and nephews include Carla Rocke (Edward), James Pope, Jr., Wesley Pope (Debbie), and Charlotte Dupree (David); and great nieces and nephews Shamyra Pope, Markus Rocke, Jr., Julia Rocke, Andrew Langston, Stevenn Langston, Daizah Pope, Weston Pope, Jasmine Dupree, Sequoia Dupree and a host of extended family members.
Lady Mavis will forever be remembered for her beautiful dimples and radiant smile, but most of all for the love she showed toward others by opening her doors and heart to those in need and, of course, giving the best hugs and kisses ever. She never met a stranger and was never shy about sharing her thoughts and views out of love.
As she takes her place in God's heavenly chorus, her memory will forever remain and presence truly missed. Thank you, Father God, for sharing this amazing and beautiful soul with us for almost 73 years!
