Marshall Henry Rice (retired CCPD Sergeant) passed away on Monday, March 23, 2015. He was born in Cuero, TX on February 15, 1935 and moved to Corpus Christi at an early age. He attended George Washington Carver Elementary and continued his education graduating from Solomon Coles High School in 1954. On January 22, 1955 he married Jimmie Wooten to which 1 son and 2 daughters were born.
Marshall was the 1st African American in the Corpus Christi Police Academy graduating in 1964, and during his career—received his Associate's Degree in Police Science from Del Mar College. He loved his job of protecting and serving the community until his retirement in 1990 and was heavily involved with assisting in efforts of desegregation during the Civil Rights Movement. Sgt. Rice was one of the first African American police officers on the force, and in 1968 he received an award for "Most Courteous Police Officer."
Mr. Rice was an active member of St. John Baptist Church until his health began to interfere with activities. He was also former Department Chairperson of the Transportation Committee, Trustee Emeritus, participated in Baptist Training Union, and Small Group Ministries/Bible Classes.
Marshall was a Lifetime member of the NAACP and was an avid golfer until the 1990's. His love for golf resulted in becoming a member of the Gulf Coast Golf Association earning him many awards and trophies. He also enjoyed traveling and discussing historical events because of his interest and knowledge in many events in history. He will surely be missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents and son Ronald Rice, but is survived by his wife Jimmie L. Rice; 2 daughters: Drusilla Rice and Kendra (Michael) Goynes both of Corpus Christi; a sister Tommie L. LaRue of Houston, TX; 2 brothers: Eugene Rice of Sacramento, CA and James Rice of Humble, TX; 4 grandchildren: Romeo Rice, Kyja Rice, Michael Goynes II, and Keylan Goynes; 2 great grandchildren: Brandon and Jaydyn Rice; & a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 30th from 5-8pm at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home 5026 Old Brownsville Road. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31st at St. John Baptist Church 5445 Greenwood Drive. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
