Obituary

Harold Lee Evans was a precious Valentine's baby, born on Wednesday,
February 14, 1945 in the Bronx, New York to Harold and Rose "Rosalee". The
oldest of four children, he often spoke about fond memories of his childhood,
where he would play stick ball and play handball in Crotona Park. He served as
an altar boy at St Paul's Episcopal Church and would love to build pigeon coops
on the rooftops and fly pigeons, "his birds". Many days were spent swimming,
climbing rocks, roller skating and singing Doo Wop with his friends.
He was a devoted and loving son and brother who would also take care of
his family. He was always a very kind young man. He worked at Epstein's Drug
Store for many years. He was an excellent dancer and danced salsa with his
sister. He was always dressed to impress, sometimes taking half an hour to
comb his hair. Always very organized and neat, he was particular about where
everything was placed.
Harold was educated in the New York City Public School system. He
graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1963. Shortly after turning 19 years
old, he joined the Army and went off into the Vietnam War. The war was a
frightening experience for him. There was a time where he was separated from
his troops, and he fell into a river. The current was strong, and it was life
threatening and extremely traumatic. He thought it was the end of his life. At
that moment, he heard the voice of the Lord saying "Reach Out", and so he did.
There was a branch that he grabbed that saved his life. It was then that he
promised he would serve the Lord forever.
After returning from the war he worked for Montefiore Hospital and the
United States Postal Service. Inspired to be the best version of himself, he
attended Bronx Community College. Years passed and the military moved him
to Corpus Christi, Texas.

He was a man of faith who would attend church with his family. He would
lead songs in the choir. The military would often send him on trips back to
Washington D.C. and New York. He would hand out $2 bills to his children and
ask "You need any change?'"
The next chapter of his life didn't slow him down. He went back to school
to study furniture upholstery and refrigeration at Del Mar College. Every free
second he had was spent in the garden, planting beautiful, colorful flowers and
plants. He had the best landscape in the neighborhood, with pristine green
grass that was a plush six inches tall. Harold also took excellent care of his
German Shepard, "China". She truly was his sixth child.
His weekends were spent taking care of his aquarium, full of Tetras,
Silver Dollars, and algae eater fish. Harold spent his last day enjoying what he
loved most, using his hands to beautify and enhance his home. He was a servant
of God, a man with a strong work ethic, a moral soul, a mentor, a gentleman,
and a dedicated father, son, brother, companion, and friend. Harold's life on
earth was, indeed, a job well done.
Harold Evans Sr. was preceded in death by his mother, his father, his
sister, his brother, and his son. Harold Evans Sr. is survived by his four loving children,
his two honorary children, his son-in-law, his two daughters-in-law, his fourteen grandchildren,
three great grandchildren, his aunt and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
