Evelyn
Coleman
Apr 2, 1933 — Sep 14, 2025
On the morning of Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 1:35 a.m., one of God's beloved angels, Evelyn Coleman, "Big Mama," was called home from labor to reward. Evelyn was born April 2, 1933, to the late Eugene and Mamie Davis in Oakwood, Texas.
She received her formal education in Oakwood and Waco, TX.
She met the love of her life, Walter Coleman, and to this union, five children were born. She was a military wife who traveled with her husband and children. During these travels, she attended nursing school in Corpus Christi, TX, where she worked for Driscoll Children's Hospital in the ER and the Nueces County Health Department for many years. She later transitioned to private duty nursing, where she eventually retired.
She accepted Christ at an early age at Chappell Hill Baptist Church in Waco, TX. She later joined Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Dr. F.L. Fillmore Sr. and Rev. Jimmie Miller. Subsequently, she became a member of True Faith Baptist Church under the late Rev. W.Z. Terry and former Pastor Allison. Sister Coleman was most recently a member of Zion Fair Missionary Baptist Church in Sinton, TX, under the leadership of Pastor Alton Coleman. During her years of service and dedication to the church, she served as a Sunday School and Mission teacher, sang in the choir, and was the announcing clerk.
Big Mama was a remarkable cook and cherished her family, but most importantly, she loved the Lord and had unwavering faith. She had a love for people, and her kind heart, laughter, and smile touched everyone who knew her. Evelyn Coleman will be greatly missed.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Mamie Davis; her husband, Walter Coleman; her daughter, Sharon Green; two grandsons, Edward Taylor and Joseph Fillmore; one granddaughter, Pamela Fillmore-Brown; one great-granddaughter, Imagene Fair; and her brothers and sisters: Granville Davis Jr., Lucille Davis, Fred Davis, Lillian Davis, Syrel Davis, Florida Davis, Roscoe Davis, Lottie Davis-Hynes, M.T. Davis, Nokomis Davis-Joyner, Leon Davis, Lorenzo Davis, Wilma Davis, Mary Davis-Wright, Charles Davis, and Jeremiah Davis.
