Deacon Lawrence James Bassett
Lawrence James Bassett, age 70, went to meet his heavenly Father on February 14, 2015.
Lawrence was born in Bryan, Texas on July 31, 1944 to Lawrence Bassett and Neomiah Thornton-Bassett in Bryan, Texas. Lawrence and his mother moved to Corpus Christi in1952 and united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He accepted Christ as his personal savior and was baptized by Rev. O.L. Terrell in the Nueces River.
He served as the Youth Director and sang in the Youth Choir and with a quartet. He also sang in the choir at Roy Miller H.S. He had a beautiful voice. Lawrence graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1964. He then joined the National Guard and served his Country for six years. He was also the first African-American employee at Coca Cola Bottling Co. in Corpus Christi.
Lawrence met Ada Louise Green in high school, and married his high school sweetheart on March 16, 1965. To this union two daughters were born, April D. Bassett and Pamela A. Bassett. Lawrence enjoyed serving God and he loved Bible Study. He first became a deacon at True Faith Baptist Church under Rev. Terry, and later at Mt. Zion Baptist Church under Rev. Harry Williams. He was also a deacon at St. John Baptist Church under Pastor Derrick E. Reaves.
He was employed at ASARCO refinery for 18 years. He later obtained certification for heating and air conditioning from Del Mar College and was employed as the maintenance supervisor for La Quinta Hotel. Shortly thereafter, Lawrence hired on with Sherwin Alumina Company, formerly Reynolds Metals Company –Sherwin Plant. He retired from Reynolds in 2013 after 24 years of service. He then pursued a career in security and was a commissioned security officer until his passing.
Lawrence is preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Bassett; mother Neomiah Turner; one uncle, and seven aunts.
Lawrence leaves to carry on his memory a loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Ada Bassett; two daughters, April D. Bassett of Corpus Christi, Tx., and Pamela A. Bassett-Jones of Beeville, Tx.; two aunts, Vesta Cornwell of Daly City, Ca and Ruby Bassett of Denver, Co; one uncle, Curly Thornton of Brooklyn, NY; one step-sister, Thurma L. Hilton of Corpus Christi, Tx.; one brother-in-law, Clarence Simmons of Corpus Christi, Tx. Five grandchildren Chad (Letty) Bassett-Sanders and Darryl (Ashley) Bassett-Sanders of Corpus Christi, Tx., Dustin Jones of San Antonio, Tx., Spec. Antonie (Spec. Garrett) Gonzalez of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Taylor (Jose) Jones of Beeville Tx., nine Great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 20,2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at St. John Baptist Church, 5445 Greenwood Dr.
Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Baptist Church.
Burial will follow at Seaside Memorial Park and Cemetery.
