In Loving Memory: Burnetta Woods Mitchell (June 22, 1944 - November 11, 2023)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Burnetta Woods Mitchell, who peacefully left this world surrounded by the love of her friends and family. Burnetta was an extraordinary woman whose vibrant smile and infectious laughter lit up every room she entered.
Born on June 22, 1944, in the Jamestown Community of Newton County, Burnetta was the youngest of three children of C.B. and Oletha Woods. She attended grade school in Newton before the family later relocated to Jasper, Texas. There, they became valued members of Greater New Bethel Baptist Church. Baptized at an early age by her uncle the Rev. Harvey Peacock, she was a woman of faith. Burnetta proudly graduated from J.H. Rowe High School in 1961 and continued her education at Lincoln Business College and Prairie View A&M.
Burnetta shared more than 40 beautiful years with her beloved Vernes Mitchell, creating a cherished home in Corpus Christi. She dedicated her career to IBM for over four decades, holding various positions in different locations. Together, they raised their four children - Rodney, Catrina, Pam, and Charles - and actively participated in their community at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church, where Vernes was baptized and raised. She was a godmother to Felicia Dailey, Jamon Spears and E Laysha McDonald.
A pillar of strength to her family and friends, Burnetta always brought joy to those around her with her quick wit and warm heart. She had a knack for making each family member feel special and was known for her generous spirit. Burnetta's love for card games made her an unstoppable force, and she adored her dogs as if they were her own children. A dedicated shopper, she had a passion for fashion and ensuring she and Vernes were always stylishly coordinated.
Burnetta is survived by her children Catrina Scott and Charles Land and his wife Catherine Land, as well as her grandchildren Alton Scott, Courtney and her husband Michael Harris, Cole Nesbitt, and Jessica Land. She is also mourned by her brother Roy Milton Woods Sr. and his family, her sister Lexa Faye Jones and her family, her brother-in-law Warren Mitchell and his wife Candy Mitchell, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services to celebrate Burnetta's life will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church, followed by a burial on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
