On January 20, 2015 our beloved sister departed this world to be with the Lord. Brenda Joyce Pickens was born in August 29, 1953 in Falfurrias, Texas to the Union of the late Eugene Porter Jr. and the late Hilma Josephine Porter. She came to know the Lord at an early age at Calvary First Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was Coordinator of the Fun and Games events for the Annual Church Picnic and hosted special events. Brenda Pickens was crowned 2014 Black History Month Queen of Calvary First Baptist Church. She also offered her time and talent in service at Joint Heirs Fellowship Church in Houston, Texas where she participated in the Summer Feed the Children Program and hosted the Women's Tea Parties.
Brenda Pickens graduated from Moody High School (1971) and furthered her education at Del Mar College and Prairie View A & M University. She worked at Phillips 66 in Old Ocean, Texas, at the State School in Austin, Texas, and at the Corpus Christi Independent School District before retiring. She was an active executive board member of the Corpus Christi Area Alliance of Black School Educators and volunteer in the community. Brenda Pickens touched the lives of so many people with her gift of love, care and concern for others.
Preceding her in death were both of her parents, Eugene and Hilma Porter, two brothers, Darrell Porter and Louis Shiner Jr. and a son, Adam. Brenda is survived by her former husband, Michael Pickens. God blessed her with two daughters, LaTricia Johnson (Dwight) of Corpus Christi, Texas and Antonette Tomlinson (Robert) of Houston, Texas and a niece she loved like a daughter, Sjolanda Dykes (Craig), and nine grandchildren. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Mildred Tilley-Knox-Clark, a brother, Dwayne Cecil Porter and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, January 23, 2015 at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home 5026 Old Brownsville Road, CC TX 78405 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a wake from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Calvary First Baptist Church 2906 Carver Drive, CC, TX 78405 with Pastor C. E. Richardson, Sr. officiating.
Interment will be Monday, January 26, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Memory Gardens Funeral Home and Cemetery 8200 Old Brownsville Road, CC, TX 78415
