Obituary


Betty Lou Cross- mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother we loved so deeply-transitioned from earth to glory on Monday, September 14, 2015.
Betty Lou Spears was born May 15, 1936 in Luling Texas to the late Mathew and Alberta Spears. She was the first of two daughters.
She completed her primary and high school education at Carver Elementary and Solomon Coles High School. She attended Prairie View A&M, and Del Mar College where she pursued and completed nursing education.
She was united in marriage to Fred Thomas Jr. To this union two sons were born; Byron K. Thomas and Christopher D. Thomas. She relocated to Orange, CA and worked at St. Joseph's Hospital Orange County. During her time in San Diego, CA a son was born with Richard Gober, Terence I. Gober. After a few years in San Diego, CA, she returned to Corpus Christi, Texas until her retirement after 37 years with Memorial Medical Center.
She continued her love of nursing by working as a school nurse with Corpus Christi Independent School District.
She was married to Eddie Cross from 1975-1981.
As a long-time faithful member of Calvary First Baptist Church, Betty truly believed that one person can make a difference. She served as a member of the Usher and Mission Board and held various offices with her District, State and national Conferences/Conventions.
She was preceded in death by parents, Mathew Spears and Alberta Steans, and sister, Johnnie Mae "Honey" Cornel. She leaves to cherish her loving memories her sons B. Keith Thomas, Christopher D. Thomas and Terence I. Gober, her brother Isaac Spears, two sisters Lisa Spears, and Gloria Griffin. She also is survived by seven grandchildren, Edlena Thomas, Tristan Gober, Jaala Gober, Briana Gober, Sade Austin, Sadalia Ellis, DeJa Williams and 6 great grandchildren.
Her friends and family can rejoice in the knowledge that she came to the end of her journey with comforted by the words from Psalms 116:15 "Precious is the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Calvary First Baptist Church 2906 Carver Dr. Corpus Christi, Texas with a wake service to be held at 6:00 p.m. that same evening.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary First Baptist Church, with Bishop C.E. Richardson, Sr. Officiating.
Burial and graveside service will be held on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Luling, Texas at the Luling Civic Cemetery.
